按劍橋辭典的定義,stewardship有兩個解釋:(1) Someone's stewardship of something is the way in which that person controls or organizes it; (2) care or management (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/zht/詞典/英語/stewardship)。前者可譯作「管理方法」、「組織方式」;後者可譯作「照料」或「管理」。
但無論在目前的管理或環保領域裡,stewardship一詞通常均帶有盡責、悉心照料的意味。韋氏辭典的定義與此更為貼近,它對stewardship的解釋是:The conducting, supervising, or managing of something, especially
the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care. (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/stewardship)
簡單來說,就是對受人所託付的事物細心、盡責地管理,而非一般的管理而已。韋氏辭典並進一步舉例,說對自然資源的
stewardship 就是這個意思。
管理學上的 stewardship
theory 將 steward 視為一個忠於組織最高領導人,凡事以組織利益為優先的管理者。因此有人將 stewardship
theory 譯為管家理論或忠僕理論。而stewardship則有人將它譯為僕人領導──在《領導就是喚醒生命》一書中便是如此。在環保領域,環境哲學家DesJardins指出,許多宗教皆認為人類應該盡責地管理造物主託付給他們的自然資源,而stewardship就是以養育、保護的態度去對待大自然:
The idea of stewardship calls on humans to
nurture and protect God’s creation and not to destroy it. (DesJardins, 2013, p.
43)
DesJardins 並進一步以聖經中的善牧比喻來詮釋stewardship 的概念。在猶太教和基督宗教的觀念中,一個良善、盡責的牧人不僅視羊群為資源,從中取得食物及羊毛,也會餵養、照料和保護羊群。以
stewardship 對待地球資源的人也是如此。因此,若在環保的文獻裡只將
stewardship 譯為「管理」,是無法反映這名詞的精神。
教宗方濟各在2015年曾針對生態議題發表《願祢受讚頌》通諭,該書的中譯本將 stewardship
譯作「負責任的管理」,是比較完整一點的翻譯。若要簡單一點,或許可譯為「管理保護」或「管護」。
總之,視乎脈絡不同,stewardship
可有不同的譯法。在管理領域,可譯作悉心管理、忠僕管理、忠僕精神;在環保領域,可譯作悉心管理、負責任的管理、管護、忠僕精神或善牧精神。
